When the PNC (Pastoral Nominating Committee) wrote the Summit mission study, one of the areas they identified as vital to Summit was growth of the church. To approach this issue, session is reading and discussing a book called “Unbinding the Gospel” by Martha Grace Reese.Rather than giving a list of suggestions on how to increase membership, this book challenges readers to think specifically about why they should share their faith with others.
In the first part of the book, the author discusses sharing faith: why people do or do not talk about their faith with others. She also invites the reader to think about questions like “What difference does being a Christian make in my life?” and “Why does it matter whether or not other people become Christians?”
The book goes on to discuss changes in society over the last 60 years (for example, statistics support that America is becoming a less religious country) and then gives some specific examples of experiences of different churches. We are just getting started, but we wanted to invite other members of the church to read along as well. You can purchase a copy through Angela. And if you want to talk about the book or any thoughts on membership growth, feel free to discuss your reactions with any of the session members.
