In her book, The Sixth Extinction, Elizabeth Kolbert takes us on a journey around the world where she talks with scientists and researchers about the many extinctions that are happening in the plant and animal world. Our current rate of extinction may soon rival catastrophes of the past – with the distinction that this one is human-caused. Learn about the Panamanian Golden Toad, the Great Auk, coral reefs and trees in the rainforest – as well as the people who care about them and who are trying to make a difference.
The Social Justice and Environment Committee is sponsoring a discussion of this wonderful book on Wednesday evenings in July. Although it’s science journalism, it raises profound theological questions. We’ll be asking: what does this mean for us as Christians? Please join us! We encourage you to order the book yourself, but Cheryl will be ordering a set ($21 each). Kolbert writes in a clear and engaging style, but some of the infor-mation may be hard to grasp. Don’t worry about the details! They’re not necessary for understanding the book and we’ll provide reading helps in the group. We encourage everyone to read the first four chapters by July 9th.
