Summit Church Joins Covenant to Signal Welcome

Posted by: Chelsea Badeau on Mon, Jul 8, 2013

At its May meeting, the Session voted to join the Covenant Network of Presbyterians, an organization that works for full acceptance of the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) community in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and is also committed to dialogue among people with different beliefs. You can learn more at their website: www.covnetpres.org. This decision was taken after listening to Elders from First Presbyterian Philadelphia, which is a member of the Covenant Network. Although the congregation already has several GLBT members, Session was concerned that this inclusiveness may not be apparent to visitors. “We want to make sure that every one walking through our door feels welcome right away,” says one elder. Summit has been engaging in a process of learning and study on the issue of sexuality, continuing this fall with a Bible study series. We’ll also invite the public to participate. Date and time will be announced. There are also excellent resources on the Covenant Network website.
