On Palm Sunday and Easter, we’ll be receiving the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. This ecumenical offering is a chance to share our resources with people in need in the U.S. and around the world. One-third of the offering goes to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance; another third goes to the fund for Self Development of People, which provides money for economic projects to help people become self-sufficient; and the rest goes to the Presbyterian Hunger Program. These are all long-standing, well-run programs that are ready to help when disaster or misfortune strikes.
Our current economic crisis may have its epicenter in Wall Street and the Florida housing bubble, but in our globalized economy downturns spread quickly, from neighborhoods in Philadelphia to India and Iceland. Those least able to weather a bad economy are usually hit hardest, and they are all neighbors whom Jesus calls us to love and serve. These kinds of times are the hardest of times to give – but also the most important. Would you consider increasing your gift from last year? Of course, all gifts are appreciated and modest gifts together make a large difference. Please put your offering in a OGHS envelope, or simply mark a check made out to Summit and send it to the church. Thank you!
