Amendment 10-A Update

Posted by: Chelsea Badeau on Sat, Jun 11, 2011

On May 10th, the Presbytery of the Twin Cities voted to approve amendment “10-A,” becoming the 87th Presbytery to do so and confirming its passage. This amendment will remove language from the Book of Order which required clergy, deacons and elders to practice “fidelity in marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness.” The passage of 10-A removes the bar to ordination of gay, lesbian, transgendered or bisexual candidates, but does not require it. Sessions and Presbyteries are directed to prayerfully discern the gifts and call of each candidate, guided by Scripture and the confessions – something that Summit has been doing all along! As of this writing, 96 Presbyteries in total have voted for Amendment 10-A; although the church remains divided on this issue, the amendment was passed with a resounding majority.
