Another Year with R.E.A.C.H. "...and with that, the gym fell silent." Those were my thoughts as we shut off the lights and closed the door on another year of our REACH program for our Summer hiatus. Since early September 2013, we opened our doors and hearts to dozens of young people every other Friday night. Averaging about 34 youths a night, REACH was a place for youth to come eat, play games and enjoy each other's company. Lead by an outstanding group of volunteers: Jane Von Bergen, Maurice Smith, Hector Badeau, Jermaine and Jerome Johnson and Pastor Cheryl Pyrch, we were able to provide a safe environ-ment for young people to gather for three hours. Over the summer we will look at different ways to build on the program including ways to allow other members to share their talents with us. Thank you to the volunteers and everyone for their prayers and words of encouragement. Until next time, have a great summer! Chris Scott, Jr. R.E.A.C.H. Director |

The Sixth Extinction by Burt Froom Our Summit Social Concerns and Environment Committee plans to convene a study and discussion group on the middle three Wednesday evenings of July -- the 9th, 16th and 23rd of July. We will be dis-cussing the new book by Elizabeth Kolbert, “The Sixth Extinction.” Kolbert is a staff writer with “The New Yorker” magazine, and she has followed the global warming crisis closely. She shows how animal and plant species are currently moving toward extinction -- sudden extinction, in some cases. The fifth extinction occurred 65 million years ago when a meteorite struck Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Suddenly, all the dinosaurs (except the birds) were exterminated and became extinct. Today, life on earth is similarly threatened. Kolbert shows how. She writes calmly and clearly. As the Methodist environmentalist Bill McKibben has said, “The last time a meteor struck the earth, nearly everything died. This time, we're the meteor!” We need to save the earth from ourselves. Please join us in a vital discussion in July. You may order the book through Kindle, online, or if you would like to save on shipping, speak to Cheryl, and she will make a group order ($22 each). The free library also owns 16 copies - if you get on the waiting list soon it should come in well in time for the book group. Let Cheryl know if you need help obtaining a copy. |

Have you made your pledge? Thank you to the many people who have given or sent in their pledge cards. The finance committee has been working hard to create a budget for next year, and the Trustees and Session have been giving their input. The boards are hoping to approve a budget in December that will keep our ministries strong, take care of staff, and support some modest initiatives. We’re able to plan best when we have pledges in hand, so if you’ve not yet done so we encourage you to put a card in the offering plate or send it to the office. Thank you! |

Recent Programs at Summit How Did They Go? The Spirit of Summit Community Day (October 27) was a delightful afternoon of dancing, music, conversation and crafts. Highlights included demonstrations by Fiddlekicks and Germantown Country Dancers, spirited psalm-singing with the P’Nai Or congregation, and a series of beautiful mini-concerts in the sanctuary with the sun streaming through the window. A bonus – although not planned as a fundraiser, we raised about 1000 after expenses through the silent auction and food sales! Thank you to the many people who put in hours of work, and especially to chair Mary Moorhouse whose vision led the way. Remember Those in Prison (November 16) drew dozens of people from inside and outside the congregation – the parlor was full morning and afternoon with people and energy. The film “Broken on All Sides” inspired spirited small group conversations; all enjoyed the delicious lasagnas, salads and desserts; and our panelists Ellen T. Greenlee and Tom Innes were highly knowledgeable and engaging. Folks lingered after the program to continue the conversations. Thank you to the Social Justice and Environment Committee for organizing this important event. |

New Source of Electrical Power for Summit Church Recently the Trustees decided to purchase its electricity from a provider of renewable wind power called "Clean Currents." This purchase will take effect in mid-June 2013. Power from this renewable source will take the place of power purchased from a provider of conventional power, mainly coming from generating plants using coal and natural gas. This will help Summit reduce its carbon footprint and encourage investment in renewable energy. Thanks to research by Allan Walters - who surveyed a range of providers - our electricity will now be cheaper than that provided by our last company. A win/win! |

Future friends of Summit Presbyterian Church By Christopher Scott, New REACH Director I wanted to take the time to introduce myself to each and every one of you. First, thank you for accepting me into your Summit family. People who are familiar with Summit have told me nothing but great things about the church and the congregation and I can't express how excited I am to be part of it. To tell you a little about me, I grew up here in the city of Philadelphia. I graduated from Strayer University with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Networking. I have a passion for working with the youth. The REACH program has had excellent leadership and it is my hope, with your help, to keep that ball rolling. I look forward to meeting and possibly working with you. Until then, God bless you. |

Summit Church Joins Covenant to Signal Welcome At its May meeting, the Session voted to join the Covenant Network of Presbyterians, an organization that works for full acceptance of the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) community in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and is also committed to dialogue among people with different beliefs. You can learn more at their website: www.covnetpres.org. This decision was taken after listening to Elders from First Presbyterian Philadelphia, which is a member of the Covenant Network. Although the congregation already has several GLBT members, Session was concerned that this inclusiveness may not be apparent to visitors. “We want to make sure that every one walking through our door feels welcome right away,” says one elder. Summit has been engaging in a process of learning and study on the issue of sexuality, continuing this fall with a Bible study series. We’ll also invite the public to participate. Date and time will be announced. There are also excellent resources on the Covenant Network website. |

Spirit of Summit Community Day, Sunday October 27th, Noon-5 p.m. Plans are well underway for a day to highlight and celebrate not only the mission and activities of Summit Church, but also exciting work done by the many tenants and community members who call Summit their home. The Sunday afternoon, after-church event will include music in the sanctuary, a silent auction, and tables and demonstrations by the many arts and social service organizations at Summit. Although we hope to raise some funds, the main purpose of the day will be to reach out and welcome the community to our House - and to share blessings and fellowship. Volunteers are needed! There are many ways to join in, and we're hoping everyone will play some part in this all-church event. The next meeting will be Wednesday, July 24th at 7:00 p.m. Please talk to Mary Moorhouse (215) 242-2635 or Rob MacGregor (215) 242-3095 to learn more. |

New REACH Director Welcome to Christopher Scott, who will be our new REACH director in the fall! Christopher comes to us from First Presbyterian Church of Germantown, where he has coached their youth basketball team ("The Disciples") since 2005. He is also an ordained Elder, has been a youth advisory delegate to the General Assembly, and volunteers at the Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry (GACM). Christopher grew up in South Philly, and now lives in the area. He graduated from Strayer University with a degree in computer networking in 2007, and in his professional life he works with a technology company under contract with the Philadelphia School system. He came to us through the recommendation of Pastor Nancy Muth and Director Eileen Jones of GACM. An ad-hoc team of REACH volunteers and Personnel Committee members interviewed Chris (Susan Beetle, Shirley Atchison, Hector Badeau, Jane Von Bergen and Cheryl Pyrch). Chris has already been to REACH and attended worship at Summit. We are excited that he will be joining us and will soon be introducing him to the congregation. |

Nursery Care Planned Visitors and members who are parents of small children will soon have a new option. For kids who are too young for Sunday School, but too active and restless to stay in the worship service, we are planning to provide a staffed nursery during services. The two caregivers will be paid in part from budgeted funds, and in part from a community donation. Pastor Cheryl will be working with the Christian Ed committee and the Personnel Committee to define the job and hire child-care workers. We expect to begin providing a nursery by the fall. |

In worship that day we will also be celebrating graduates, and thanking our Sunday School teachers. So please mark your calendars for June 9, and join us for a cook-out instead of the usual coffee hour, on the side lawn (or in the gym, if it rains). We hope to provide games, crafts, and other activities for the kids. (*A very small committee, so volunteers to help clean up would be welcome.) |

REACH Program Director Position Hector Badeau, the director this past year of the REACH youth program will be resigning in June to pursue other projects. Hector stepped in after Lori Chaffers, the long-time Director, moved to the Scranton area. Hector has done a wonderful job in this transition period and will continue to volunteer, but we are looking for someone who can staff the program (every other Friday night) and coordinate and train volunteers. Fifty to sixty kids regularly attend this popular program. Thank you, Hector! If you are interested in the position, or would like to recommend someone, please speak to Pastor Cheryl or Susan Beetle, chair of the Personnel Committee. |

"The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom"; A study of Proverbs, Wed. Nights 7:30-8:45, 5/22, 29 & 6/12, 19 The book of Proverbs isn't well known - it appears only a few times in the lectionary - but it's both provocative and delightful. In it we hear the female voice of Wisdom (Sophia) calling all to receive the Lord's instruction, and poetic observations and words of advice on the way of the world. It's a book that reflects its times and lifts up the virtues of order, but it's also inspired feminist reflection and has its revolutionary moments. All welcome! |

Elder Diner Cooks Needed! Elder Diner continues to grow in spirit, people, and fun. The coordinating team of Anne Glass, Dave Rupp and Sandy Dorsey invites the congregation to donate a main dish, dessert or salad for our weekly Tuesday noon luncheon. We can help plan and guide you on quantity - cooking for 20+ is not as intimidating as it may sound, as our diners are moderate eaters. We also reimburse and encourage folks to submit receipts. Dishes may be cooked ahead and left at the church on Sunday. Look for the calendar during coffee hour, or talk with any member of the team to get ideas or ask questions. |

Summit members are welcome to join us! We will let you know more details as speakers are lined up, but if you’re interested mark your calendars (in pencil, at least) for the 2nd Thursdays of February/March and April at 7:30. The Other Carpenter, Service Opportunity On Saturday, March 9th, join with other Summit members to help homeowners in west Philadelphia with basic repairs. Renewal Campaign News The renewal campaign committee met on January 15th to discuss the second phase of Summit’s fund-raising plan. As you know, the tower is near completion, hopefully by end of February, and we have adequate funds to complete this and begin other critical repairs, e.g., the roof and pointing. The tremendous response and commitment to the Renewal Campaign by the congregation have brought us to this critical point. We are now beginning our Phase 2 outreach to the extended Summit family---former members of Summit, children of members, and community partners and leaders in an effort to make the other long term repairs. Involvement and suggestions from members of the congregation are an important part of this next phase. We are looking for information about former members, where they are now living, and how best to reach them. With your help we can contact them, and visit with those who are local. Summit Church is a landmark and icon in the community with 1000’s of members and visitors who have come through our doors over the last 127 years. We believe that most former members view Summit very fondly and might be interested in some kind of contribution toward fixing the roof and other needed repairs. The committee will be meeting again on Tuesday, February 12 at 7:30 PM (anyone is welcome!) for continued brainstorming. We are very grateful for any assistance, from our long term and older Summit members for their thoughts and information. We’d like to set aside some time at coffee hour on Sunday, February 10 for whomever is interested in reviewing our list of old friends and potential contacts, adding to it and helping Summit move forward on this very important work on our facilities. If you have any questions or suggestions of people to contact, please contact Mary Moorhouse, Peggy or Rob MacGregor, or Deborah Merritt. |

A Rousing Pageant By Evan Meyer On Sunday, December 16, during the worship service, Summit members put on the annual Christmas Pageant, which has been a fixture for more than 20years. (The current version was designed by Deborah Merritt, working from an original concept by Evan Meyer.) Remembering the days when angels’ sings were made out of bent wire clothes hangers, and a doll was used for Baby Jesus because the wooden manger was too rickety to trust to a live child, this performance looked to this writer like a Broadway production. It was, as always, heartwarming, unpredictable, amazingly cute, and a great way of preparing the way for the celebration of the birth of our Lord. The fun continued that evening when the Pageant was repeated for the residents of Stapeley nursing home. Thanks go to many people. Look in the Annual Report of the Christian Ed Committee for a full listing of the wonderful cast and crew, but a shout-out here to Deborah Merritt, Director, and to the (often overlooked) musicians: Ryan Tibbets and the choir, Alvina Ransaw (whose work with the kids all fall prepared them to sing out) and Steve Fitzgerald, who provided musical accompaniment at Stapeley. |

Unfogging the F.O.G. Do your eyes glaze over whenever you hear the words “Presbytery,” or “Book of Order” or “parliamentary procedure”? Well, there’s big news involving all these things, but—wait—I know I’m losing you already. Stay with me! This will be painless. Because of some changes at the national church (I’m trying to avoid certain words), all churches need to reconsider--though not necessarily change--how they do certain things, like how many people make a quorum for a meeting, what is the size of a Nominating Committee, and what is the minimum term of service for a church officer. We have a subcommittee of geeks working on proposed by-laws to address these things: legislative geek Evan Meyer, policy geek June Cairns, and faith geek Cheryl Pyrch. The congregation will be presented with proposals at the proper time. This project is necessitated by changes to the Form of Government (or F.O.G.). We’ll try to keep it as unfoggy as possible. |

Jeffrey Heaton is keeping the list of people who are interested: please call him at 215-983-5101 no later than Thursday, September 13th (or you may email Cheryl in the office, cpyrch@summitpres.net). Sunday School Starts Soon, Serving Sundaes It may not seem like summer is almost over, but this is the last Shout before we kick off the fall Sunday School Program, so we want all parents to get ready. We will have a Kick-Off celebration at coffee hour on Sunday, September 9, which will include ice cream sundaes, and we will be asking parents to sign their kids up for Sunday School. (Sign up is not a requirement; it’s just helpful to us to have the names and contact information for children who will likely be attending.) Once again this year, the kids will be singing at Stapeley retirement home from time to time, and practicing with Alvina Ransaw once a month. We are currently planning on having the first rehearsal on September 9. Full Sunday School will start the following week. If you can’t make it on Sept. 9, but would like us to know your child is interested in Sunday School, please email one of the Christian Education Committee co-chairs: Evan Meyer (evan.meyer@phila.gov) or June Cairns (jmc1156@yahoo.com). |

Prayers of the Bible Wednesdays, Sept. 12- Nov. 14 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Board Room “We do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.” These words from Paul’s letter to the Romans remind us that prayer is not necessarily easy or something we just “know” --- that we depend on the Holy Spirit for help. The Spirit intercedes for us directly, and also through the words of scripture, where we find prayers that we can make our own. This fall our adult study will look at some of them, from the psalms and the cries of the prophet to the prayer that Jesus taught, and prayers on behalf of the church from Paul. All are welcome! |

Shared Presbyterian Hosting The NW Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network has nowhere to host their homeless families for two weeks in September, so Director Rachel Falkove sent an SOS to three Presbyterian co-hosts, Chestnut Hill, Mount Airy, and Summit. Mount Airy offered to provide the space on condition that the other Presbyterians gave them some support. Chestnut Hill agreed immediately to take the second week. Summit is being asked to co-host during the first week - September 9 -15. So let's join our fellow Presbyterians in this worthwhile service. Can you help by providing a meal one evening or by sleeping over one night? For more information or to volunteer contact Margaret VanUmmersen at 215-205-2648 or vanummersen@verizon.net. |

One Great Hour of Sharing On Palm Sunday and Easter, we’ll be receiving the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. This ecumenical offering is a chance to share our resources with people in need in the U.S. and around the world. One-third of the offering goes to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance; another third goes to the fund for Self Development of People, which provides money for economic projects to help people become self-sufficient; and the rest goes to the Presbyterian Hunger Program. These are all long-standing, well-run programs that are ready to help when disaster or misfortune strikes. Please be generous! You may put your offering in a OGHS envelope, or simply mark a check made out to Summit and send it to the church. Thank you. |

There will also be a Moment for Mission. This is a good Sunday to invite friends who may not ordinarily attend worship but who are interested in environmental issues. |

Airy at 6:15 a.m. to join several other members of the Philadelphia Presbytery on a trip to the Washington Office of the Presbyterian Church (USA), which represents the concerns of Presbyterians (as raised in the bi-yearly General Assemblies) to members of Congress. Staff in the Presbyterian office were joined by Lutheran colleagues to review the 2012 Farm Bill, especially as it relates to domestic food security. After lunch and conversation, we visited the offices of Senators Casey & Toomey to share our concerns about hunger and the need to maintain programs for the most vulnerable. Congratulations Confirmands and Welcome New Members During worship on January 15th, we celebrated the completion of the confirmation class by Dianne Bradley-Bullock, David Childs, Kylie and Devin Dunbar, and Julia Struzyna with the gift of Bibles and prayer. Julia was baptized, and January 15th is now her baptismal date as well as her birthday! Confirmation class leaders James Dorsey, Lois Gaskins and Pastor Cheryl Pyrch enjoyed getting to know the wonderful youth of our church and will continue to accompany them on their faith journey. |

Creeds Classic - Wednesday Evening Adult Study, January 11 – February 8 7:30 p.m. in the Board Room On Sundays when we celebrate the sacraments (baptism and communion) we recite the Apostles Creed. Occasionally we recite the Nicene Creed, another ancient – and longer – statement of faith. Many at Summit struggle with saying “I believe” or “we believe” to everything in these creeds. Was Mary truly a virgin? Did Jesus really descend into hell? What does it mean that he is “one substance with the Father?” Come learn about these creeds: where they came from, what they meant then, why the church has held onto them, and how we can understand them now. You still may not be able to assent to everything, but the conversation will be rich and provocative. |

Interfaith Hospitality Network by Peggy MacGregor During the week of October 23-29, under the supervision of Margaret Van Um-mersen, 18 members of Summit provided hot dinners to 4 women and 5 children who were spending three weeks at the Mennon-ite Church of Germantown as part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN). Seven more members also provided over-night supervision. IHN coordinates local churches to provide housing and food for a small number of homeless women and children who are part of their program, which offers all kinds of mentoring, counseling, financial services, job location, and assistance in finding per-manent housing. IHN continues its con-nection with these families long after they graduate from the program. Margaret re-ports that IHN is a very impressive organi-zation. They are located in the NIM build-ing on Germantown Avenue next to Mt. Airy playground, and their website is philashelter.org. Click to read more. |

Save the Date: Confirmation Class – January 15, 2012 Five young people in our congregation have been meeting monthly to learn what it means to become a member of the church, and to discern whether they‟re called to do so at this time. Our meetings – led by Lois Gaskins, Cheryl Pyrch, and James Dorsey – have been rich and interesting. We are blessed to such wonderful young people in our congregation! We are saving the date of January 15th to receive confirmands and to celebrate our young people and their work with the class, whether or not they decide to join the church at this time. |

Elder Diner Moving Forward, Thriving, and Looking Forward First, let me thank the entire Summit family for your support of Elder Diner. So many folks have contributed food that they are too numerous to name, but we have enjoyed your festive salads, hearty soups, nutritious breads, delectable desserts and wonderful main dishes. Additionally, many of our regular attendees are also bringing their culinary favorites, and helping with various aspects of set-ting and cleaning up. One particularly notable contribution has been from Catherine Dickerson, who has transformed the dingy, dirty, disgusting little parlor kitchen into a beautiful, bright, clean and inviting place that we can actually use! Thank you, Catherine. A final reminder is that, though we welcome donated contributions to our meals, we also encourage you to submit receipts for reim-bursement, even for smaller items like bread and salad. We do have a budget and there is a small cost to those that attend, and since we are encouraging regular help from many, we are happy to defray some of the cost to you. On behalf of the Elder Diner Committee, Sandy Dorsey, Anne Glass, AJ Chaffers, Crystina Atchison and Dave Rupp. |

Let There be Light – Clean Electricity Workshop January 8, 2012 after worship With the deregulation of electricity, consumers now choose their electricity providers. Among those providers are companies which promise “Renewable” or “Green” energy. What does this mean? Does it really help the environment? How do you choose between these companies? What‟s involved with making a switch? On Epiphany Sunday, January 8th, the Stewardship of Creation Committee has invited Ms. Joy Bergey, Federal Policy Manager for the environmental organization PennFuture, to speak with us about clean electricity. She‟ll explain the basics, and also provide informa-tion and guidance for those who wish to choose a renewable energy provider. Joy will give the Moment for Mission during worship, and then lead a workshop in the parlor during coffee hour. All are welcome. |

Pastor Open House, 7256 Devon St. 3-6 p.m., Saturday December 17th You are invited to help decorate my first “real” Christmas tree in Philadelphia now that I‟ve moved into a house! (My apartment building only allowed artificial ones). I had been looking forward to taking out my glass and porcelain ornaments but that will have to wait another year – for now I also have a kitten at a rambunctious stage who would destroy them in short order. Instead, I‟m going to hang paper decorations, candy canes and other hardy ornaments. I‟ll provide materials for making decorations, beverages and other treats. Come stay the whole time or just stop by. Turn right as you come down Gowen from Germantown Avenue. It‟s best to park before you reach the end of the first section of Devon – I am right around the corner. |

Annual Community BBQ A Success! by Donna Williams 2011 proved to be another successful year for the annual Summit Community BBQ! This represented the 2nd year with participation from the culinary students at Dobbins High School, who added a tremendous energy and excitement to the event. The final numbers are still being calculated, but we profited approximately $3,500 this year. Thank you to all the committee members (Don White, chairman), volunteers and friends who worked so hard to make the BBQ a reality. Many hours of preparation, planning, teaching, cooking, and organizing go into making the event run smoothly. Special thanks also to Weavers Way Co-op who not only sold pre-orders, but also hung our banner and provided an article and advertising in the Shuttle and e-blasts that helped to get the word out. Planning has already started for next year‟s BBQ – scheduled for Saturday October 27th. Please save the date and plan to be a part of the BBQ in a more substantial way. Volunteers on many levels are always needed to run the event. |

Elder Diner Elder Diner has been going strong with a new collaborative model, with more of the congregation involved in serving and hosting 20-25 "Elders" every Tuesday at 12:00. Anne Glass continues to offer strong support and wise counsel and oc-casional cooking, but more members have been cooking, cleaning, and orga-nizing under the leadership of Dave Rupp and Sandy Dorsey. We welcome - and need - more people to be on the Elder Diner Team, and we invite all members to be leaders/coordinators on a given day, to cook main dishes, to bring salads, to make/bring desserts, or even just provide bread. A sign up calendar is available at coffee hour, or you may call Cheryl in the office during the week. Talk to Sandy or Dave to learn more about this vital and joyful ministry. |

Worship at Home Please come to the "Going Deeper in Worship" series on November 9th at 7:30 p.m. when we’ll be asking folks to share how they worship (pray) at home - what’s also known as personal devotions. Bring your favorite routines/books/prayers. Please also come if you’re frustrated with your personal devotional time (it’s not easy for anyone!) or if you don’t have such a time and want ideas for getting started. We’ll offer each other support and encouragement on this rewarding but challenging aspect of discipleship. The worship committee would also like to invite members to write and submit corporate prayers of confession that we might use in worship. What might we confess as a body? Please share your thoughts. |

Restoring the Building Update By Ben Brandt Most of the tower work is complete, including the insertion of 37 x 5’ steel rods and 4 x 25’ steel rods. Also completed is extensive repointing, and substantial buttress rebuilding of one buttress on the Westview St. side.Incomplete work includes substantial rebuilding of part of a different Westview St. buttress, plus additional repointing. The contractors used a dry-core (rather than wet-core) drilling process to minimize interior (Narthex) plaster damage.Questions have recently been raised about whether this minor plaster damage and door frame movement is indeed the result of the drilling vibration or whether there is continuing arch collapse. the summer, the engineers will be responding to (hopefully unfounded) arch collapse concern, and the Trustees will be securing additional quotes for the remaining buttress repair work. Amendment 10-A Update On May 10th, the Presbytery of the Twin Cities voted to approve amendment “10-A,” becoming the 87th Presbytery to do so and confirming its passage. This amendment will remove language from the Book of Order which required clergy, deacons and elders to practice “fidelity in marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness.” The passage of 10-A removes the bar to ordination of gay, lesbian, transgendered or bisexual candidates, but does not require it. Sessions and Presbyteries are directed to prayerfully discern the gifts and call of each candidate, guided by Scripture and the confessions – something that Summit has been doing all along! As of this writing, 96 Presbyteries in total have voted for Amendment 10-A; although the church remains divided on this issue, the amendment was passed with a resounding majority. |

One Great Hour of Sharing, By Sandra Dorsey We are at that time of year where we have an opportunity to share what the Lord has given us. We can do this in unison with other Christians world wide on Palm Sunday and Easter. We are in a time of major natural and man made disasters that have upset the world. People in Japan have been devastated by natural disasters and as a result the whole world has been devastated. Japan as well as others are certainly in need of a helping hand. Stewardship of Creation Committee -- What does “dominion” mean? Since its reconstitution in November 2010, Summit’s Stewardship for Creation Committee has wrestled with these theological, scientific and political questions so as to understand God’s will and learn how to act justly and sensibly. Although under new leadership, we continue to draw inspiration from Rev. Burt Froom’s pioneering efforts on this committee. Joining with the community for advocacy, we will be a co-sponsor of the Interfaith Green Fair on May 1, 1-5, at Germantown Friends Meeting. Also, Cheryl Pyrch joined preachers from around the country in a “preach-in” on Global Warming February 13th. Dozens of members also signed letters to our Senators encouraging them to both pass a climate bill and to protect the EPA’s right to begin regulating carbon emissions. Our next meeting is Sunday, March 13th, after church. Please join us! Call chair Marguerite Spencer at 215-242-2284 or marguerite-spencer@yahoo.com for more information. |

Lectionary Bible Study Wednesdays, 7:30-8:45 pm January 12 – March 2, Led by Cheryl Pyrch A lectionary is a cycle of Bible readings used by the church for preaching and teaching. At Summit, we use a 3-year cycle called the “Revised Common Lectionary” which has four readings each week: a psalm, a reading from another section of the Old Testament, a passage from one of the New Testament letters and reading from a gospel. (We use two of the readings in worship). In this study we’ll look at the passages for the upcoming Sunday and briefly discuss their background, see how they fit together, explore questions and pray with them. Lectionary study is a good way to prepare and deepen your worship experience. Please speak to Cheryl if you have any questions. All welcome. |

Tower Update This fall saw good progress on the Summit Tower project. Many structurally signify-cant stones which had been turning to sand and shifting the tower have been replaced with harder stone. The new stones can be found in the archways and in the corner behind the bushes. The new stone is Wissahickon schist from a quarry depth of over 17 feet, while the old stone was believed to be a softer surface schist. Amateurs can estimate the hardness of the schist by inspecting the color. The schist with plenty of golden mica is the softer material that turns to sand after a few decades of pressure. The bluer-hued stones are harder and more durable; they can be expected to weather to a grey color like the rest of the church. Stewardship of Creation Meeting, Sunday, January 9 Under the inspirational leadership of Reverend Burt Froom, Summit Church has established a tradition of environmental responsibility. Burt and Pastor Cheryl called on all interested parties to participate in a brainstorming session in November to discuss what further measures we as a congregation might consider to take a more active role in caring for God's creation. Discussion considered both individually focused and geo-political approaches. One idea proposed occasional Minutes for Mission during the worship service which would provide tips on effective ways to reduce energy consumption and embracea "greener" lifestyle. Others supported the notion of advocating communally for environmental causes through the political process. Concern was also expressed that Summit isn't effectively managing energy use in its own buildings. It was agreed that we should form a new "Stewardship of Creation" committee to establish an agenda for Summit. We will meet again on Sunday, January 9th after worship to refine our ideas and direction. We urge all who are interested in this endeavor to join us. Please speak to Reinhart Struzyna or Marguerite Spencer for more information. A group of us met in November to talk about Summit's commitment to the environment and were excited about the work ahead:the name for our renewed committee is "Stewardship of Creation." |

Oct. 2010--Renewal Campaign Update Our campaign, “Renewing the Spirit, Restoring the Buildings,” is in full swing. It was launched on September 12th with an after-church reception organized by Kathy Shaifer, Mary Moorhouse and friends – thank you to all who made that such a delicious and festive occasion. We are now asking members and friends to prayerfully consider two pledges between now and October 31st, “Celebration Sunday.” The first pledge, the 2011 stewardship pledge, supports mission and ministry in the coming year: worship, music and Christian education programs, the outreach programs of REACH and Elder Diner, as well as benevolence giving, our Deacons' ministry, staff salaries and building utilities. The second pledge, the renewal/capital campaign pledge, supports restoration of our buildings: tower repair, roof replacement, pointing and stonework. The second pledge is for a period of three years. |

Tower Update -- Oct. 2010 The tower is safe to approach!Have a look at the progress. After moving substantially during the spring and early summer, the Westview St. doorjamb of the tower has been re-built. A 3 foot steel re-enforcement bar has also been inserted into the rebuilt section, stabilizing the new work. You can see the round coring hole where the steel was inserted; plastic tubing (used to pump in cement around the steel) is still visible, but will be removed before the work is complete. Negotiations are under way with masons for pointing and selective stone replacement, which will both be required before we can consider the tower complete.Work is expected to be finished this fall. |

Renewal Campaign Has Launched! On Sunday, September 12th, we launched the Renewal (Capital) Campaign to restore our buildings for mission and ministry. On that day we had a short program after worship explaining the scope of the campaign and inviting everyone’s participation and a festive coffee hour. Of course, the sermon was on the call to stewardship – and the excitement and joy it brings. We are NOT asking you to fill out a pledge card or give money right. In fact, we want you to wait. We’ll be asking you to consider your pledge to the renewal campaign along with your regular stewardship commitment for 2011, and to return both pledges on or before October 31. (You will receive a packet in the mail the week of September 19th). In the meantime, every Sunday, we’ll have a Moment for Mission and bulletin inserts on the ministries of Summit and its Vision for the future. We’ll be hosting a Coffee Hour with the Treasurer on October 3rd, where you can ask your questions and have reports explained. We’ll also be asking if a member of the Renewal Campaign may speak with you on the phone or in person; not to pressure you to give, but to share more about the goal and purpose of the campaign, and to answer any questions you may have. |

Our Vision for Summit As we prepared to launch the Renewal (capital) Campaign, our consultant, Rev. Nancy Muth, encouraged us to prepare a Vision Statement. A Mission statement (which we already had) focuses the purpose of a congregation; a Vision statement describes the current hopes and dreams of a congregation in its new and changing context. This Vision statement should answer the question, “If this is our mission, where are we headed as a church in the next five to ten years?” The Renewal Campaign Committee developed this Vision – approved by Session - from the 2007 Mission Study, potluck conversations, and leadership retreats. In September and October, members will give Moments for Mission on different aspects of the Vision. We hope they will stir your imagination! |

Budget 2010 Update Good news! The congregation has responded quickly and generously to the Session/Trustee request to “pay up and pay forward” 2010 pledges. In addition, a number of members have indicated they will be able to contribute beyond their 2010 pledge -- so we hope to restore recent cuts to salaries and benevolences, at least in part. The Trustees and Session will keep the congregation informed as the numbers come in and they are able to assess the situation. Of course, even with the extra donations, it remains important for members to fulfill 2010 pledges. |

Summit Barbecue Is Coming Up Be sure to save the date – Saturday, October 30 – for our annual Summit barbecue! Pitmaster Jim Arthur and the organizing committee are already working hard to make this event a big success. A pulled pork sandwich has been added to the menu of brisket, ribs, and sides of greens, baked beans, and coleslaw. The hours have been extended to be open from noon to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM. Weavers Ways Coop is lending a big hand to provide sales and pre-orders of whole briskets, ribs, and Jim’s special sauce. The barbecue has become a whole-church project for outreach to all of our neighbors. We are also hoping to raise lots of funds for our renewal campaign. We will need everyone to volunteer!! There will be jobs taking orders, working as cashiers, putting spice rub on the meat, helping prepare the food, making desserts, filling the orders, selling sodas and desserts, setting up and cleaning up. Everyone can do something, and no one needs to work more than one shift. Please volunteer for what you like to do, or say ‘yes’ when you are asked. For questions, contact Don and Marcia White (215) 424-7955 or Peggy and Rob MacGregor (215) 242-3095. |

Bible Passages related to Stewardship The officers of the church looked at some provocative passages on stewardship as we began thinking about our commitments for the mission and ministry of Summit in 2011 as well as the capital campaign to restore our buildings. Some are directly concerned with money; but most are not. None of them admit to single or easy interpretations and they started lively discussion among us! They are a few of many passages in the Bible related to stewardship of the earth and our lives, as well as our relationship to neighbor. We invite you to reflect on them (or on one or two of them) as well. It’s best to take out your bible so you can read them in context. Blessings on your reading! p Genesis 1: 26-31 Proverbs 30: 7-9 Isaiah 58: 6-12 Matthew 19: 16-22 Luke 12: 22-34 Acts 4: 31-37 2 Corinthians 9: 6-15 |

Matthew in Depth September 15 – November 17 7:00 – 8:30; led by Cheryl Pyrch This year the leadership has cleared the church calendar on Wednesday nights: rather than board meetings, Wednesdays will be open for study and devotions. Our first study will be the Gospel of Matthew, which becomes the focus of the lectionary beginning in December. We’ll study its background and hear from scholars, but mostly we’ll be listening for God’s Word as it comes to us through this sacred scripture. We’ll use study guides so all may participate. Please let the office know if you will join us, and plan on coming every week if at all possible. Summer homework: read the gospel once from start to finish, and come with questions! |

Thank you, Harold Tilley! Although beautiful, the snow this winter has meant more work for everyone. That’s been especially true for our church Sexton, Harold Tilley, who has gone above and beyond in his tending of our grounds and sidewalks during these weeks. He has come in at least twice a day even in the midst of snowstorms (he assures me his 4WD truck can handle nearly anything) and has put in hours to keep the church safe and hospitable. The snow came at an especially busy time with outside groups and hourly rentals, and Harold has always been gracious and helpful with our guests. Thank you also to Carl Shaifer and Reggie Ballard for their assistance. And, off the subject of snow - next time you are near the choir loft, look up! Harold has replaced those light bulbs . . . without a (high) ladder. Amazing! |

Where are the Birthday Cards? If you have a January or February birthday, you know that you did not get a pastoral birthday card this year. In the whirlwind of vacation, holidays and snowstorms I did not get them out – and realized, as much as I enjoy writing them, that I could not keep on top of them. Instead, we will begin noting them in the weekly bulletin (as well as the SHOUT) so we can give each other birthday greetings on Sunday! |

What is the Pastoral Discretionary Fund? Especially in these tough economic times, members and friends often face financial challenges for which they need a helping hand: a job loss, the need to find a new home, an unexpected medical expense or family emergency. The Pastor’s Fund is a way for the church to help while maintaining confidentiality, since gifts are made at the discretion of the pastor. The fund is replenished through the budget process and through pastor honorariums for weddings or funerals. Designated gifts may also be made to this fund. If you are facing a financial hardship, please don’t hesitate to speak to Cheryl. |
