The Sixth Extinction by Burt Froom

Posted by: Chelsea Badeau on Thu, May 1, 2014

Our Summit Social Concerns and Environment Committee plans to convene a study and discussion group on the middle three Wednesday evenings of July -- the 9th, 16th and 23rd of July. We will be dis-cussing the new book by Elizabeth Kolbert, “The Sixth Extinction.” Kolbert is a staff writer with “The New Yorker” magazine, and she has followed the global warming crisis closely. She shows how animal and plant species are currently moving toward extinction -- sudden extinction, in some cases. The fifth extinction occurred 65 million years ago when a meteorite struck Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Suddenly, all the dinosaurs (except the birds) were exterminated and became extinct. Today, life on earth is similarly threatened. Kolbert shows how. She writes calmly and clearly. As the Methodist environmentalist Bill McKibben has said, “The last time a meteor struck the earth, nearly everything died. This time, we're the meteor!” We need to save the earth from ourselves. Please join us in a vital discussion in July. You may order the book through Kindle, online, or if you would like to save on shipping, speak to Cheryl, and she will make a group order ($22 each). The free library also owns 16 copies - if you get on the waiting list soon it should come in well in time for the book group. Let Cheryl know if you need help obtaining a copy.
