The Nominating Committee is charged with proposing candidates for the offices of Elder (Session), Deacon and Trustee to be voted on at the Annual Congregational meeting on June 6th after worship.
The work of the Nominating Committee is that of prayerful discernment. We'll be seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit as to who might be called to lead our church at this time. We'll be seeking people of faith who attend worship regularly and are dedicated to the mission and ministry of Summit. We'll be thinking about the boards as a whole - not just individuals - so we can present a slate of that gives fair representation to men and women of different ages, racial/ethnic backgrounds, and spiritual gifts.
We ask you to join us in this discernment. If you believe someone might be called to serve, please suggest their names to a member of the committee - and it is perfectly appropriate to suggest yourself! Below are descriptions of the different boards; in addition to monthly meetings, officers also need to dedicate time and energy to committees or projects.
The Session is the governing board of the church, responsible for spiritual leadership, setting policy and providing oversight for all the church's ministry. At Summit (as in most churches) the Session has delegated certain responsibilities to deacons and trustees; elders are directly concerned with worship, Christian education, outreach (REACH and Elder Diner), stewardship, and personnel. Session also provides leadership in evangelism and hospitality -- areas that will become especially important during this time of Summit's renewal.
Deacons. From the Book of Order, (the “constitution” of the Presbyterian Church (USA)): "It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith." The deacons at Summit do this through care teams, cards, and visits; by arranging transportation, and through coordinating support of the Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry and Neighborhood Interfaith Hospitality Network. The deacons also distribute benevolences (the 10% of pledge income for mission beyond our doors) and provide leadership in the area of social justice.
Trustees. The trustees are charged with stewardship of our buildings and grounds and for proposing and monitoring the church budget. Trustees coordinate repairs, work with tenants, and oversee investments. The Trustees are deeply involved in the Renewing the Spirit, Restoring our Buildingcampaign, and will be recommending specific projects and timetables for building restoration.
Deacons and Elders are "ordained" - an act by which the church sets apart persons to be presbyters (ministers of Word and Sacrament or elders) or deacons, and that is accompanied with prayer and the laying on of hands. The Session prepares candidates for ordination, and those being ordained will also answer questions regarding their faith and commitment. Although trustees are not ordained, we also commission and pray for them, as their important work also needs the support and guidance of the Spirit.
We encourage you to contact us with any suggestions or questions. We hope to present a full slate of candidates on June 6th, and the moderator will also ask for nominations from the floor. Below we have listed current board members; those in the class of 2010 are ending their terms, and if there’s an asterisk next to their name it means they served two terms and can’t be nominated for the same board this year. Thank you for your support, and please keep us in prayer.
